Ive always had strong views on where technology is taking us, what adds value, whats really disruptive and what is infact just the inevitable. Im reading “The World is Flat” by Thomas L Friedman, and I highly recommend giving it a read, it infact inspired this post. There are only a handful of people I respect enough to say they have a solid vision of what technology and the internet will bring to us in our future. The people I do respect are passionate believers in how we share knowledge, interact, communicate and innovate. Somehow along the way however I feel some businesses just sit back in their comfort zones as the wheels of innovation drive to a grinding halt because of the fear of new business models and that the “me too” is ok psychology. This generally comes form the “Its just a job” guys, more often than not they can be the people best poised to make the difference.
I personally feel lucky, through my job, my friends and my family Ive had exposure to Web, Music, TV&Film and the opportunity to work in most spaces in my professional life. I feel its given me a clearer understanding of where the real visionaries are taking their respective industries and Ive formed some opinions of my own I’d like to share. I could write a book on this sort of thing but I’ll start by giving you just the index (see below), here are my views on convergence in the technology space.
Competing in a converged world …
• Theoretically speeds will eventually exceed service’s demand
• Differentiation will be defined by the quality & range of your value add’s
• Free-mium will be come a value add business model
• Price will be simple, bundled and seamless to the customer
• Strategy will have four tiers
• Mirroring industry leaders
• Partnering with industry leaders
• Buying those who do it well
• Learn to innovate & react quickly
All of the above is becoming achievable and much of it is there today, the bottom line is - In essence technology convergence and application should be …
Easy > Useful > Affordable > State of the Art.
