2007 – UNESCO Certification (Sustainable Development)

.

UNESCO’s (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizaton) purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and the human rights along with fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the UN Charter. My studies in Sustainable Development started in 2007 and concluded in 2008 in their Irish division. I subsequently visited their HQ in Paris and offices in Brussels. In that time I spearheaded a project to reduce the number of discarded commuter newspapers from the streets of the capital (Dublin) by exerting pressure on the Incumbent rail provider to provide proper recycling facilities in hub stations. The project was a success and led to the majority of the daily 140,000 newspapers distributed to being recycled. After collaboration with the newspapers and local organizations the rail provider opened recycling points in each of there 5 city centre stations.

2007 – UCD Psychology (and Interpersonal Communications)

.

Throughout my career I’ve learnt valuable lessons through experience and continued education focussed solely on topics relevant to my career. Being a great communicator is key to being a great leader but all the experience in the boardroom will not prepare you for every situation this is why I chose to study at UCD. Through continually developing my skills I’ve learnt to create stronger relationships with my colleagues and peers. Studying at UCD in the evenings helped me understand more clearly peoples emotional states and how to work more effectively toward a successful common goal in a organization. Quite simply nothing prepares a individual more for people management than the study of behaviors and learning to be more empathic when it comes to understanding the people around you. From a Product Management perspective it opened doors to move from the “Pop Psychology” we read in business publications to understanding the emotive states of collective individuals and reading/analysing data returned from product marketing research.

2006 – Acting for Camera

.

They say life is a stage and to an extent its true. Nothing can prepare a person for their first public appearance, their first job interview or negotiation better than just doing it, repeating it, refining it and perfecting it. Acting is an incredible art thats not only valuable on the screen or stage but in everyday life, business and making things happen. Acting infront of a camera builds confidence and self-awareness quickly and effectively preparing an individual for even the most complex situations. I studied at the Gaiety school of acting under Kristian Marken and regularly appear infront of the camera.

2003/4 BT Broadband

.

BT Ireland were one of the first (only beaten marginally by Imagine Telecom) operators other than the incumbent (Eircom) to provide Broadband services in Ireland. My role in this project extended far beyond a Project Manager as I represented BT Ireland to the Communication Regulator to develop the framework that exists 7 years later for existing operators utilizing the incumbents network to provide services. This truly was a highlight in my career as today I see the impact that Broadband has had on society and that I’ve played a part in opening up competition to advance the infrastructure and technology available to consumers and businesses. My internal organization focus was to assess the impact Broadband would have on the existing business (Process, Workload, Systems etc) and regularly meet with managment to make BT Ireland a Broadband capable business.
